How to Prompt AI for Perfect Coloring Pages (with Examples)
2026-04-08
Why prompts matter
AI image models are very literal. The difference between a great coloring page and a muddy mess is usually one or two words in the prompt. Good news: you don't need to learn "prompt engineering." Just follow a few simple rules.
Rule 1: Lead with the subject, not the style
❌ "A beautiful coloring page in the style of a children's book about a dog"
✅ "A puppy holding a balloon"
Magick Coloring already adds the "coloring page" part of the prompt automatically. Your job is to describe the thing.
Rule 2: One subject is better than three
The more subjects you cram in, the messier the result. Pick one main subject and one or two simple props.
❌ "A unicorn and a dragon and a princess and a castle"
✅ "A unicorn standing in front of a castle"
Rule 3: Use concrete objects, not abstract words
AI models are great at nouns and weak at adjectives like "magical," "beautiful," or "amazing." Replace them with concrete things.
❌ "A magical adventure"
✅ "A wizard in a tall hat holding a glowing book"
Rule 4: Describe action, not emotion
"A happy bear" gives you a generic bear. "A bear holding a honey jar and smiling" gives you a scene.
Rule 5: Use the style picker, not the prompt
If you want toddler-friendly thick lines, click "Simple" — don't write "for toddlers thick lines please." The style picker tunes the model directly and is far more reliable than words.
Rule 6: Keep it under 15 words
Long prompts confuse the model. Short, punchy descriptions work better.
Rule 7: If it doesn't work, regenerate or rephrase
AI generation is non-deterministic — the same prompt can yield slightly different results. If the first result is messy, click generate again. If it's still wrong, simplify the prompt.

Common mistakes
- Asking for color words. Don't write "a red car" — the page is black and white. The AI gets confused.
- Asking for text. AI image models cannot reliably write text. "A sign that says happy birthday" will give you garbled letters. Skip it.
- Famous characters. Most generators block trademarked characters (Elsa, Mickey, Pikachu). Describe them generically: "a princess in a blue dress with a long braid."
